When the sun shines on the Isle of Wight -and it does a lot more often here than the rest of the UK- there’s no better place to be. With our mild climate, extra hours of sunshine, and a laid-back coastal vibe, you could almost convince yourself you’re in the Mediterranean, not just off the south coast of England!
Add in the Island’s stunning coastline, rolling countryside, and an abundance of activities for every type of explorer, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an unforgettable sunny day. We asked our staff to recommend some of their favourite things to do on the ‘Sunshine Isle’...
Make a Splash: Watersports Adventures
Surrounded by sparkling seas, the Isle of Wight is a paradise for water lovers. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a curious beginner, there’s an activity here with your name on it.
Try paddleboarding at Freshwater Bay, catch a wave at Compton Beach, or glide across the waves in a kayak at Seaview. Feeling adventurous? Head to Cowes and try your hand at dinghy sailing -or book a lesson with one of the Island’s expert instructors and learn the ropes in style.
Wildlife with a View
For an unforgettable day out, combine a scenic hike with wildlife spotting. Pack a picnic bursting with Island treats, think local cheeses, Isle of Wight tomatoes, and garlic chutney, and head for the countryside.
Tennyson Down offers breathtaking views across the western coast, while The Pepperpot in Chale is a quirky stop with panoramic vistas. Keep your eyes peeled for seabirds, Chalkhill Blue butterflies, and even the rare Pyramid Orchid in the summer months.
Thrill Ride: Rib Around The Needles
Craving a thrill? Hop aboard a rib ride and zip around The Needles, the iconic chalk stacks that rise from the sea off the western tip of the Island. Feel the salt spray on your skin as you weave between dramatic cliffs and sea caves, and keep a lookout for the ‘sometimes-spotted if you are lucky’ dolphin pod, playing in the waves during the summer.
Cycling in the Sunshine
Two wheels, endless adventures. The Isle of Wight is a cyclist’s dream, with a network of scenic routes to suit all abilities.
Cruise along coastal paths, tackle woodland trails, or meander through quaint villages and sun-dappled countryside. Whether you're a hardcore cyclist or just out for a leisurely spin, there’s always time for a pit-stop - think tea, cake, and a big slice of laidback charm.
Secret Gardens and Green Spaces
For a moment of calm, explore the Island’s lush parks and gardens. Fort Victoria Country Park is a hidden gem on the northwest coast, with woodland trails, sculptures, and stunning sea views. Or head to Ventnor Botanic Garden, where the tropical plants are a sight to behold.
Breathe in the fresh air, wander among ancient trees, and watch the boats drift by on the Solent.
Island Flavours: Al Fresco Dining
Nothing beats a lazy lunch in the sunshine. From buzzing seafront cafes to cosy courtyard spots, the Island is packed with places to enjoy a bite to eat outdoors.
Sip an iced coffee or a Mermaid Gin cocktail as you gaze out to sea. Tuck into fresh seafood, local produce, and, of course, a scoop of Isle of Wight ice cream to cool off.
Sunset Magic
As the sun sinks low, head west for a show-stopping sunset. Compton Bay, Totland Beach, and Headon Warren all offer front-row seats as the sky erupts in shades of pink, gold, and orange. Or head north to Gurnard for a sunset stroll with harbour views.
There’s something truly magical about the way the Isle of Wight glows in the evening light - an unforgettable end to a perfect day on the Sunshine Isle.
